NEO-MALTHUSIAN THEORY

The Neo-Malthusian came as the reaction to the Malthusian theory. There as great discussion about the views of Neo-Malthusian theory during the period extending from 1820 till to upto end of the Second World War. The basic difference between the Malthusian and Neo-Malthusian concept is that the Malthus favoured the celibacy and moral restraint as the basic measures to control o birth rate. While the Neo-Malthusian favoured the artificial method to control on birth rate.

Misses Margret Sanger (America), Marry Stop (England) were the main advocates of the Neo-Malthusian concept. They recommended the artificial method to control on birth rate rather than adoption of self-restraints. They accepted the view of Malthus that occurrence of flood, droughts, famines are caused by the over population. But, according to them the overpopulation should be control by the use of contraceptive unlike Malthus. They considered that the sexual desire is natural while the desire to have child is social.

According to the Noe-Malthusian the urge for sex is not the same among of the persons, it varies from person to person because it depends upon the age, health, psychology and the environment of the men.

Moreover, the Neo-Malthusian also do not accept self-restraint to control on birth rate. According to them sexual urge is natural and by self-restraint it will be cause of mental and physical illness of the people and it also infuse demoralization in the society.

They favoured the use of contraceptive for controlling the birth rate because by the use of contraceptive man not only fulfil urge for sex but it also controls the birth. Their use improves the health of the women because they have not undergone frequent child birth.

Misses Marry Stop Favoured even abortion for unwanted child births and unwed mothers.

The Neo-Malthusian emphasised use of scientific and technological methods to increase the food production as it has been done in Europe and USA.

However, the doctrine of Neo-Malthusian concept has been nearly adopted by all the countries of the world. But there is some apprehension about these method in developed countries like Sweden and France where there has been regressive population growth, due the great decline of birth rate. Moreover, the use of contraceptive become the cause of degradation of the society.

According to Prof. Ceid, the principles of Neo-Malthusian lead to the ‘preparation of sexual frauds’ in the society.
